A second Myrtle Beach TV station this week covered the sudden closure of a hotel on Ocean Boulevard South, highlighting the impact on both human and animal residents.

That’s all thanks to Cats of the Boardwalk founder and president, Laurie Peterson, who contacted local news stations to raise awareness in hopes of finding shelter solutions for all affected. Last week, staff and long-term residents were unexpectedly informed the South Seas Hotel at 11th Avenue South will shut down from September 30 through February.

While human residents must find alternative living arrangements on short notice, the hotel’s resident cat colony faces abandonment as their caretakers move away. Laurie estimates around 30 stray and feral cats will be left without caretakers unless community solutions are established.

It so happens Laurie’s husband Ron volunteers at the Myrtle Beach soup kitchen and is familiar with available food and shelter services. If you or someone you know are affected by an eviction, they should contact New Directions of Horry County.
